Active vs passive voice
The passive puts the focus on the action or the receiver, not the doer. Use it when who did it is unknown, obvious or unimportant.

The chef cooks the meal.

Passive
the subject receives the action
The meal is cooked by the chef.
这道菜由厨师烹饪。
